California borders the Pacific Ocean, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, and the Mexican state of Baja California. With an area of 160,000 square miles it is the third largest state in the U.S and is a little larger than Germany in size. California's geography is rich, complex, and varied. In the middle of the state lies the California Central Valley, bounded by the coastal mountain ranges in the west, the Sierra Nevada to the east, the Cascade Range in the north and the Tehachapi Mountains in the south. The Central Valley is California's agricultural heartland and grows a large portion of the United States's food. The northern half is known as the "Sacramento Valley" (drained by the Sacramento River), while the southern part of the valley is known as the "San Joaquin Valley" (drained by the San Joaquin River). With dredging, the Sacramento and the San Joaquin Rivers have remained sufficiently deep that several inland cities are seaports. The Sacramento-San Joaquin Bay Delta serves as a critical water supply hub for the state. Water is routed through an extensive network of canals and alameda pumps out of the delta, that traverse nearly the length of the state, including the alpine Central Valley Project, and the State Water Project. Water from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Bay Delta amador provides drinking water for nearly 23 million people, almost 2/3 of the state's population, and butte provides water to farmers on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley. The Channel Islands are calaveras located off the southern coast. The Morgage Sierra Nevada (meaning "snowy range" in Spanish)colusa include the highest peak in the contiguous forty-eight states, contra costa Mount Whitney, at 14,505 ft (4421 m), world-famous Yosemite National Park, and a deep freshwater lake, del norte Lake Tahoe, the largest lake in the state by volume. To the east of the Sierra Nevada are el dorado Owens Valley and Mono Lake, an essential migratory bird habitat. In the western part fresno of the state is Clear Lake, the largest freshwater lake by area entirely in glenn California (Lake Tahoe is split between California and Nevada) The Sierra Nevada reaches arctic temperatureshumboldt in the winter and has several dozen small glaciers, including the southernmost gimperial lacier in the U.S. (Palisade Glacier). About 35% of the state's total surface inyo area is covered by forests, and California's diversity of pine species is unmatched by any other state. California kern contains more forestland than any other state except Alaska. In the south kings is a large inland salt lake, the Salton Sea. Deserts in California make up about 25% of the lake total surface area. The south-central desert is called the Mojave; to the northeast of the lassen Mojave lies Death Valley, which contains the lowest, hottest point in North America, Badwater Flat. The lowest pointlos angeles of Death Valley and the peak of Mount Whitney are less than 200 miles apart. Indeed, madera almost all of southeastern California is arid, hot desert, with routine extreme marin high temperatures during the summer. Along the Bankruptcy Questions California coast are several mariposa major metropolitan areas, including San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland, Los Angeles-Long Beach, Smendocino anta Ana-Irvine-Anaheim, and San Diego. California is famous for earthquakes merced due to a number of faults, in particular the San Andreas Fault. It is vulnerable to tsunamis, wildfires, andmodoc landslides on steep terrain, and has several volcanoes. California's history is so Bankruptcy Questions romantic and filled mono with legend that it is fitting that the region was named for a fictional island peopled by monterey pagan Amazons, the setting of a 16th century Spanish book popular when that nation's explorersnapa first came to this part of North America's Pacific Coast. At first, "California" meant the peninsula on the nevada west coast of modern Mexico now known as Baja California or Lower California, and the orange Spaniards believed that they had discovered an enormous island. Only as they ventured furtherplacer inland did they find that "California" extended north to join the continent, and they plumas named this extension "Alta California," the region that now forms the 31st state of the riverside United States of America. Even in physical terms that state is a sacramento region of extremes. It stretches 825 miles from its northwest corner on the 42nd parallel on the san benito Pacific Ocean to its southeast corner on the 32nd parallel at the junction of the Gila and san bernardino Colorado Rivers. The winding shoreline contains 1,264 miles of beaches and harbors. And san diego elevations run from 14,495 feet at the peak of Mount Whitney to 282 feet below sea level at san francisco Death Valley, with both of these landmarks little more than fifty miles san joaquin apart in Inyo County. The complex geologic forces behind san luis obispo these phenomena created a region with exceptionally complicated and challengingsan mateo topography. On the west, the Coast Ranges of mountains run along the Pacific from the Oregon santa barbara boundary to Marin County. The Transverse and Peninsular Ranges continue the line of mountains santa clara along the Pacific below that point. The state's northern boundary runs through the Klamath and santa cruz Cascade Mountains and the Modoc Plateau. Running south from these northern highlands, the shasta Great Valley of the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers extends 400 miles, bounded sierra by the Coastal mountains on the west and the Sierra Nevadas on the east. The siskiyou Sierra Nevadas--the state's largest single mountain range--run south for 400 miles from Lawssen Peak to solano Tejn Pass in Los Angeles County. East of the southern Sierra Nevadas are the mountains sonoma of the Great Basin, with the Sierras and Basin ranges bounded on the south by the stanislaus Mojave Desert. Below the Mojave lies the Salton Trough, the last of California's great geological sutter regions, a desert created when the Baja California peninsula pulled away from tehama the Mexican mainland. California's climates are as varied as trinity her physical regions. There are heavy Bankruptcy Questions snows in the high mountain ranges, Bankruptcy Questions mild and temperate tulare conditions along the coast, wide variations in temperature and humidity in the tuolumne valleys, arid conditions and great temperature fluctuations in the desert. The geologic ventura forces that shaped the state's terrain and dictated patterns of climate also created spots of extraordinary yolo beauty like the geysers of Sonoma County and the grandeur of the yuba Yosemite Valley.
